U.S. takes stake in USA Rare Earth as it funds mine and magnet plant to cut China dependence

Federal financing targets rare earths and magnet manufacturing

The U.S. government is backing USA Rare Earth with major financing and a minority equity stake as part of a broader effort to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals and the components built from them. The package is designed to support development of a rare earth mine in Texas and a magnet manufacturing facility in Oklahoma, two steps officials say are essential for reshoring key parts of the supply chain.

Rare earths underpin technologies that are central to national security and the modern economy, including defense systems, electric motors, and advanced electronics. Policymakers have increasingly focused on magnets as a strategic bottleneck, since mining is only one part of the challenge—refining, alloying, and high-performance manufacturing determine whether raw material can become usable industrial output.

A long-term project with near-term strategic urgency

Officials framed the investment as one element in a larger push that also includes funding for other U.S.-based rare earth and materials projects. The goal is to build resilience against supply disruptions and price shocks, while creating domestic capacity that can serve both commercial and defense needs. Even supporters of the initiative acknowledge that reducing China’s dominance will take years of sustained capital, permitting progress, and technical execution.

For the company, the financing offers a pathway to scale up extraction and manufacturing, while for the government it provides leverage and visibility into timelines and output. The challenge ahead will be turning funding into operating facilities, navigating environmental and community concerns, and building a workforce and supplier base capable of producing consistent, high-quality material at competitive cost.

  • The U.S. is investing in USA Rare Earth and taking a minority stake to support domestic capacity.
  • Plans include a rare earth mine in Texas and a magnet factory in Oklahoma.
  • Officials say the strategy aims to reduce reliance on China across critical mineral supply chains.
